The city of Bayreuth is located in the east of Germany, on the banks of the Main River in the north of the rich county of Bavaria. Among other reasons this city is famous for having hosted Richard Wagner during the last years of his fruitful life, from 1872 to 1882.
After tumbling through Germany and having many economic problems to cover the expenses of his artistic life, Richard Wagner arrived in Bayreuth searching a place where he could present his latest works. After several refusals of funding, Wagner founded several Wagnerian societies around the world, which had the function of patrons to support the construction of the building he had always dreamed of, since the existing theatre could not accommodate the scenic and orchestral complexity of his works.
Finally, Wagner achieved his dream thanks to the Wagnerian societies and the economic help of his former employer, Luis II of Bavaria. On 13th August 1876, the Bayreuth Festival was inaugurated in the new Bayreuther Festspielhaus with the world premiere of the last two works of the Ring of the Nibelung: "Siegfried" and "Götterdämmerung". "Das Rheingold" and "Die Walküre" had already premiered a few years earlier in Munich.
The year 2019 marks the 140th edition of the festival and presents an atypical festival because the Wagner Ring will not be represented, giving way to a new Bayreuth canon. This year the program is composed by "Lohengrin" conducted by Christian Thielemann. The opera star Anna Netrebko is set to make her Bayreuther Festival debut in 2019. She will be appearing as Elsa in two performances of the opera Lohengrin. Thielemann will also be proud to conduct "Tristan and Isolde". Other indisputable classics of the festival are "Parsifal" directed by Semyon Bychkov, "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" and the premiere and new production of "Tannhäuser", where we will enjoy Valery Gergiev as conductor and the celebrated American tenor Stephen Gould in the title role.
