Così Fan Tutte is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He started the composition in 1789 in Italian language, with the libretto having been written by Lorenzo Da Ponte (who also wrote Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni). The premiere of the opera was on 26 January 1790 at the former Burgtheater in Vienna.
The famous opera buffa Così Fan Tutte takes place in Naples during the 18th century and covers the universal topics love, fidelity and intrigues. The opera especially excels at using clever irony, self-satire and revealing the ambivalence of emotions. The two male protagonists are absolutely certain of the loyalty of their two fiancées, the two sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi. However, the skeptic Don Alfonso considers all women to be unfaithful and wants to prove it to the young men. Thus, the exciting storyline takes its course and ends with the famous saying "Così fan tutte! ("Everyone does it that way!").
The opera contains some of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's most beautiful arias, and although the libretto was considered frivolous during his lifetime, it clearly shows Mozart's realistic and unclarified view of the sexes.
