Tosca is the universally popular work composed by Giacomo Puccini, an opera that still delights and fascinates the audience today. It is a melodramatic opera in three acts. The libretto was written by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica based on the drama La Tosca by Victorien Sardou. The premiere took place on 14 January 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, now the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, under conductor Leopoldo Mugnone. The premiere of Tosca was a major social and political event: the audience included prime ministers, ministers of culture, senators and deputies, from the second act also the Queen, as well as the cultural elite of the country, such as the composers Pietro Mascagni and Franceso Cilea and Siegfried Wagner.

The plot takes place in Rome in 1800, starting at noon on 17 June until dawn on 18 June in a time of political upheaval under the reign of the merciless police chief Scarpia. The royalist Tosca loves the Republican Cavaradossi. This is the starting point for one of the most beautiful and popular opera love plays ever, since Tosca can be understood as a synonym of love, passion and death.
